If one of my paintings is particularly popular I make a screen print from it. I hand-cut indirect photo-stencils; these are positive stencils that are bonded onto screens. A positive is needed for each inked colour. There are typically 24 colours in one of my prints. I use lacquer inks on rag paper. It takes a day for me to cut the positive, mix and pass ink through the screen, and let the paper dry for each colour. These are limited edition prints and I am the print maker. It is less common for an artist to make his own prints.
My prints sell for $200. The exception is a small print called Waterfall (a). By photographically reducing the positives from Waterfall (b), I was able to use the already mixed inks and use paper off cuts from the larger print. These savings allow me sell a limited edition screen print for $50.
